How to Hide Photos on Android (Every Built-In Way, Ranked)

The quick answer

  • Any Android phone: in Google Photos, select the photos, tap Add to > Move to Locked Folder, then Move.
  • Samsung Galaxy: move photos into Secure Folder, or on One UI 8.5 use Move to private album in Gallery.
  • Android 15 and later: set up Private space in Settings > Security & privacy and give it its own lock.
  • The catch: Locked Folder opens with your normal phone screen lock. If someone knows your PIN, they can open it.

Android gives you more ways to hide photos than iPhone does, but they are not equal. Some open with the same PIN that unlocks your phone. Some can have their own lock. One wipes your photos if you uninstall an app. Here is each option, the exact steps, and the honest weak spot of each, so you can pick the right one for the photos you care about.

Option 1: Google Photos Locked Folder (any Android phone)

Locked Folder is built into Google Photos and works on Android 6 and later. It is the easiest option and the one most people should know about.

How to set up Locked Folder

  1. Open Google Photos.
  2. Go to Collections, then Locked, then Set up Locked Folder.
  3. Follow the prompts to unlock with your phone's screen lock.

You can turn on backup during setup. More on that choice below.

How to move photos into Locked Folder

  1. In Google Photos, select the photo or photos.
  2. Tap Add to, then Move to Locked Folder.
  3. Tap Move.

On a Pixel 4 or newer, you can also touch and hold the last-photo preview in the camera and tap Locked Folder.

Once moved, the photos disappear from your Photos grid, search, albums and memories, and other apps that can see your photos can no longer see them.

Locked Folder's weak spot

Your screen lock is the key. Google says the Locked Folder password is your phone's screen lock, and you can't set a different one. Anyone who knows your PIN or pattern can open it.

Without backup, it can vanish. If backup is off, Locked Folder items are deleted when you uninstall Google Photos, clear its app data, factory reset, or lose the phone. To turn on backup: tap your profile picture, then Photos settings > Backup > Back up Locked Folder. That puts copies on Google's servers under "Google Photos' standard encryption practices," which means they are protected but not end-to-end encrypted by a key only you hold.

Option 2: Samsung Secure Folder (Galaxy phones)

Secure Folder is a separate, locked space on Samsung Galaxy phones with its own copy of apps like Gallery.

How to move photos into Secure Folder

  1. Set up Secure Folder first. The fastest way to find it is to open Settings and search for Secure Folder.
  2. Open Gallery and select the photos you want to hide.
  3. Tap More, then choose Move to Secure Folder.

Can't find "Move to Secure Folder"? Some Galaxy owners on One UI 8 report the option only appears after Secure Folder has been unlocked. Open Secure Folder once, then try again. You can also move files in through the My Files app.

Secure Folder's weak spot

Secure Folder can use its own lock, which is a real step up from Locked Folder. Make sure you pick a lock that is different from your phone's screen lock, or you lose that advantage. It is Samsung only, and some users report glitches after major updates, so check your photos landed where you expect.

Option 3: Samsung Private Album (One UI 8.5)

Newer Galaxy phones on One UI 8.5 add a simpler option right inside Gallery.

  1. Open the photo or video in Gallery.
  2. Tap More, then Move to private album. You can select several items and move them together.
  3. To open it later, tap the Menu button on the Gallery home screen.

Screenshots are blocked inside the private album. The trade-off: it unlocks with your fingerprint or the screen lock you already use, so it shares Locked Folder's weak spot.

Option 4: Android Private Space (Android 15 and later)

Private space is a separate, hidden area of your phone with its own apps. It is built for hiding apps, but you can move files into it too.

How to set up Private space

  1. Open Settings > Security & privacy > Private space.
  2. Confirm with your screen lock, then tap Set up and Got it.
  3. Choose a lock. Pick a new lock instead of reusing your screen lock.
  4. Tap Done.

To move photos in, open Private space, tap + Add > Add files, pick the files, then choose Move. To make the whole space disappear, open its settings and turn on Hide private space when it's locked.

Private space's weak spot

Google is upfront that Private space can't be hidden from someone with computer access to your phone, and that if you forget its lock, you won't be able to get back in. Deleting Private space deletes everything in it with no backup.

Hidden is not the same as encrypted.

Cryptaire locks your photos behind a pattern only you know, encrypted on your phone. Coming soon to iPhone and Android.

Which one should you use?

Option Separate lock from your phone PIN Works on Biggest risk
Google Photos Locked Folder No Android 6+ Anyone with your PIN opens it
Samsung Secure Folder Yes, if you set one Samsung Galaxy Glitches after updates
Samsung Private Album No One UI 8.5 Opens with your normal lock
Android Private space Yes, if you set one Android 15+ Forget the lock, lose access
Cryptaire Yes, a pattern Android and iPhone Forget the pattern, lose access

When built-in hiding isn't enough

The built-in options are a good fit when nobody around you knows your phone PIN and you just want photos out of your gallery. Reach for an encrypted vault when:

That's why we built Cryptaire. You draw a pattern on a 5 by 5 grid instead of using your phone's PIN. Every pattern opens its own vault with its own AES-256 encryption key, and your photos never leave your phone. One honest warning before you trust any vault app, ours included: check that it says your files are encrypted, not just hidden behind a PIN screen.

How to move photos into an encrypted vault

  1. Install an encrypted vault app such as Cryptaire, then create a vault by drawing a pattern twice.
  2. Tap Add photos and pick the photos to protect. If they're in Locked Folder, move them out first so the picker can see them.
  3. Delete the originals from your gallery.
  4. Empty the trash in Google Photos and Gallery, or the deleted copies stay recoverable for a while.

FAQ

Does Android have a hidden photo folder?

Yes. Google Photos has Locked Folder on Android 6 and later, and Samsung phones also have Secure Folder and, on One UI 8.5, a private album in Gallery.

Can someone open my Google Photos Locked Folder?

Yes, if they know your screen lock. Locked Folder uses your phone's screen lock as its password, and you can't set a separate one.

What happens to Locked Folder if I uninstall Google Photos?

If Locked Folder backup is off, the photos are deleted when you uninstall Google Photos, clear its data, or factory reset your phone.

Is Samsung Secure Folder safer than Locked Folder?

It can be, because Secure Folder can have its own lock. That only helps if you choose a lock that is different from your phone's screen lock.

What is the safest way to hide photos on Android?

Use a lock that is different from your phone PIN and real encryption. An encrypted vault like Cryptaire gives each vault its own key behind a separate pattern and keeps photos off the cloud.
