How to Hide Photos on iPhone (and What Hidden Really Protects)

The quick answer

  • To hide a photo: open Photos, touch and hold the photo, tap Hide, then confirm.
  • To find hidden photos: open Photos, scroll down to Utilities, tap Hidden, then tap View Album and unlock with Face ID or Touch ID.
  • To hide the Hidden album itself: go to Settings > Apps > Photos and turn off Show Hidden Album.
  • The catch: your iPhone passcode also opens the Hidden album, and hidden photos are not encrypted separately from the rest of your library.

Every iPhone comes with a built-in way to hide photos, and since iOS 16 the Hidden album locks behind Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode. Apple's steps take about ten seconds. This guide walks through them, then gets straight about what "hidden" does and does not protect, so you can decide whether it is enough for the photos you care about.

How to hide a photo on iPhone

Apple's own steps for iPhone and iPad:

  1. Open the Photos app.
  2. Touch and hold the photo or video you want to hide.
  3. Tap Hide, then confirm.

The photo disappears from your library, your Recents, and your albums. It now lives only in the Hidden album.

To hide many photos at once, tap Select in Photos, tap each photo you want, then tap the More button (the three dots) and choose Hide.

How to find your hidden photos

  1. Open Photos.
  2. Scroll down to the Utilities section. On iPad, you may need to open the sidebar first.
  3. Tap Hidden.
  4. Tap View Album, then unlock with Face ID or Touch ID.

To put a photo back in your library, open it in the Hidden album, touch and hold it, then tap Unhide.

Can't find the Hidden album? It is probably switched off. Go to Settings > Apps > Photos and turn on Show Hidden Album.

How to lock the Hidden album with Face ID

On iOS 16 and later, the Hidden album is locked by default. If it opens without asking for Face ID, go to Settings > Apps > Photos and make sure Use Face ID (or Use Touch ID) is turned on.

How to hide the Hidden album completely

If you don't want the Hidden album to appear under Utilities at all:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Apps, then Photos.
  3. Turn off Show Hidden Album.

The album vanishes from the Photos app. Your hidden photos are still on your iPhone, still in the album, just out of sight until someone turns that setting back on.

Hidden is not the same as encrypted.

Cryptaire locks your photos behind a pattern only you know, encrypted on your phone. Coming soon to iPhone and Android.

Who can still see your hidden photos

Here is the part most guides skip. Hiding a photo keeps it out of your feed. It does not make it private from everyone.

Who Can they open your Hidden album?
Someone scrolling your Photos app No, the photo is out of your library
Someone who knows your iPhone passcode Yes. The passcode unlocks the Hidden album
You, on your other Apple devices Yes, if you use iCloud Photos the album syncs
Someone you hand your unlocked phone to Only if they also pass Face ID or know your passcode

Your passcode is the weak spot. Face ID is the front door, but the passcode is the spare key, and the Hidden album accepts it. If a partner, kid, roommate or coworker has ever watched you unlock your phone, they can open the Hidden album too.

Are hidden photos encrypted?

Your iPhone encrypts everything stored on it, including hidden photos. But hidden photos get the same protection as every other photo in your library. There is no separate key for the Hidden album. Anyone who gets into your unlocked phone and past the album lock, with your passcode for example, sees everything.

On iCloud, it depends on one setting. If you use iCloud Photos, your hidden photos sync to iCloud along with everything else. With Apple's standard data protection, iCloud Photos is encrypted but Apple holds the keys. Only if you turn on Advanced Data Protection (in Settings > [your name] > iCloud) are your photos end-to-end encrypted, with keys only your devices hold.

When the Hidden album is enough

The built-in Hidden album is a good fit when:

When you need more than "hidden"

Reach for an encrypted vault when:

That is what we built Cryptaire for. Instead of your phone passcode, you draw a pattern on a 5 by 5 grid. Every pattern opens its own separate vault, each with its own AES-256 encryption key, and the photos never leave your phone. See the full side-by-side in Cryptaire vs Apple's Hidden album.

How to move hidden photos into an encrypted vault

  1. Install an encrypted vault app such as Cryptaire, and create a vault by drawing a pattern twice.
  2. Tap Add photos and pick the photos to protect. If they are in your Hidden album, unhide them first so the picker can see them.
  3. Once they are in the vault, delete the originals from the Photos app.
  4. Empty Recently Deleted in Photos (under Utilities), or the deleted copies stay recoverable for up to 30 days.

Step 4 matters. A vault only protects photos that no longer exist anywhere else on your phone.

FAQ

Does hiding a photo on iPhone delete it?

No. Hiding only moves the photo out of your library and into the Hidden album. You can unhide it any time.

Can someone open my Hidden album with my passcode?

Yes. The Hidden album unlocks with Face ID, Touch ID or your iPhone passcode, so anyone who knows your passcode can open it.

Do hidden photos sync to iCloud?

Yes, if iCloud Photos is turned on. Apple says photos you hide on one device are hidden on your other devices too, which means they sync like the rest of your library.

Why can't I see the Hidden album?

The Show Hidden Album setting is probably off. Turn it on in Settings, Apps, Photos.

Is the Hidden album the same as a photo vault?

No. The Hidden album hides photos behind your phone's own lock. A photo vault such as Cryptaire encrypts photos with its own key, behind a separate pattern, and keeps them off the cloud.
